It has been an amazing month for me here at Brook Hill United Methodist
Church. I have found you, as a congregation, to be very gracious to us
as we have moved into the community. Diane and I both want to thank you
for the warm welcome that you have extended to us, well beyond our actual
arrival. While I know that nametags can be a major inconvenience, I do
want to thank you for wearing them. It has really made it easier to begin
putting names to faces. However, I have met so many of you over the last
several weeks, that I may never get all of your names straight!
A lot of the transition stuff took place behind the scenes
of BHUMC. Pastor Link did much to help the transition go smoothly, as
did the entire staff. The Staff-Parish Relations Committee (SPRC) worked
and is still working hard to help me in getting to know you better. In
fact, they are coordinating several get acquainted meetings,
with Diane and myself, in various neighborhoods over the next two months.
I hope that you will take advantage of them.
As I shared on my first Sunday with you, one of the questions that I will
be trying to figure out over the next several months is Why has
Brook Hill United Methodist Church continued to grow, to the size that
it has, given where it is located? Something wonderful has happened
and is continuing to happen here that attracts and retains people to life
in this congregation. And this is in spite of the fact that Brook Hill
UMCs location isnt on a major thoroughfare. My only conclusion
is that something is happening here where people have intentionally chosen
to be a part of this congregation. What I want to discover, nurture, and
plug in to, is that something of how God is working here.
I believe that the primary way to discover this will be to hear your stories.
I have had a wonderful month in meeting some of our youth as they went
on the Appalachia Service Project (ASP), being with our children at Vacation
Bible School (VBS), being with members of our congregation at worship,
having lunch with the Wise Owls, and meeting a whole bunch
of people coming and going through our fabulous facility. I am eagerly
looking forward to celebrating with you, our 160th anniversary on August
22nd where we will hear the stories of our past and look forward to our
future. I am excited to have been appointed to Brook Hill UMC as your
pastor and cant wait to learn more about you, our congregation,
and our community as time goes on.
Sincerely,
Pastor Ken
