Brook Hill United Methodist Church in Frederick, Maryland is seeking a spiritually committed Christian to play the organ and piano for our 11:00 a.m. Sunday worship service and other special services throughout the year, including Holy Week and Christmas Eve. Brook Hill is a vibrant, welcoming church with many ministries committed to serving God and community. Our music ministry is a valued and central part of our worship experience.

This position requires approximately 10–12 hours per week including independent practice time, which may vary depending on the season of the year and the skill level of the musician.

Salary: $235.00 per week ($12,220 annually). Additional opportunities exist for wedding and funeral honoraria.

Primary Responsibilities

  • This position is responsible for providing the music for our Sunday morning traditional worship service, including:
    • selecting and performing music for the prelude, offertory, and postlude,
    • accompanying choirs and persons singing solos, duets, special music, etc.,
    • leading the congregation in Hymns selected by the Pastoral staff.
  • Practice and have all musical material prepared in advance of each rehearsal, worship, or special service.
  • Accompany choir in rehearsals held on Wednesday of each week at 7:30 p.m., typically from mid-August to mid-June.
  • Arrive 60 minutes before most Sunday services to warm up with choir, orchestra, and/or soloist.
  • Begin services promptly at scheduled start time, to support live-stream programming.
  • Funeral and wedding participation may also be requested on an as-needed basis, and if available.
  • Arrange for a substitute organist when unable to be present (BHUMC does have several vetted backup musicians often available to assist).
  • Schedule piano tunings every 6 months and organ repair as needed.

 Qualifications

  • The ideal candidate will be skilled and similarly competent with both organ and piano, with advanced playing skills as demonstrated through hiring audition.
  • Experience with an Ahlborn-Galanti 3 Manual Organ and a Boston Conservatory Grand piano a plus.
  • Experience working in church settings—ideally those of the United Methodist Church.

  • Staff at Brook Hill UMC must adhere to all personnel policies including Safe Sanctuaries and agree to participate in an immediate and reoccurring criminal background check.
  • The Organist reports to the Lead Pastor and indirectly to the Staff Parish Relations Committee. This position also takes select musical direction from the Director of Music for Traditional Worship.
